When preparing for next whitetail deer hunting season, you have a few months to think about the ways you will make next season better than the last.

This is a good time to take a close look at your gear. For those of you into archery, it’s a good time to inspect your bow string and determine if you need to replace it. For those of you who participate in rifle season, it is a good time to clean your firearms for long storage.

The little things you do to prepare for next season do matter and will make you a successful hunter.

The other thing to think about is your community. What can you do in your own community to foster a good understanding of the sport? Back when my son was young and in the Boy Scouts, I was I volunteered to teach the boys about archery and help them get their merit badge. Many of these boys never shot a bow and arrow – so being able to be a mentor and teach the fundamentals was enjoyable and rewarding. And you never know how a few afternoons might impact someone’s life for the better.

So in-between your hunting season, while you’re dreaming of the perfect whitetail deer hunting trip and more bow hunting whitetail deer – consider taking time to give back.

It is a great feeling.

Happy Hunting,
Paul
