The archery deer hunting season is underway and I am pretty excited. I went out for the first time last Saturday.

And I saw a few good looking deer. I didn’t get one, but my brother in law did. And I am really happy for him. Great day in the woods.

Looks like rain this saturday, so might just stay home and snooze. I can do this, because it is still early in the season.

My favorite time is RUT, then come rain, sleet, snow, hail, floods whatever – you can bet I will be in my tree.

Good luck to all!

Happy Hunting,

I live on the East Coast and due to all the rain, I was a little late getting into my hunting spot to check things out and to put up my tree stand.

So I finally got to my hunting spot yesterday afternoon. And as much as I love buck hunting, I am also a football fan. So I had to listen to my game on the radio on my way down to my hunting spot.

The good news is, my team won. And I got my stand up. Even better is, I saw at least four BIG bucks. What a great day!

This is what buck hunting is about.

As a deer hunter, there are so many bow hunting tree stands out there, I have found picking the right one is a matter of personal taste. Over the years, I have found that a climbing tree stand works best for me.

Assuming you have a tree stand that you like, getting your stand in your tree preseason is very important.

Here in Pennsylvania, we are just a couple of weeks away from getting out in the woods. That means now is the time to conduct some initial scouting and get my tree stand in the tree.

With Tree Stands, I always put safety first.

Take a good look at your stand. Check for any rusting metal, missing bolts or nuts.

If it has a wood base, make sure it is in great condition and has no rot.

Also, I can’t stress the use of a safety harness enough. Even though it might sound goofy, I prefer a full body harness. While it might not stop a fall, it can reduce severity of injury.

If your stand is not in tip top shape, take a look at your local sporting goods store to find one that will keep you safe!

Happy Deer Hunting!

As a deer hunter, you probably already know how costly getting a deer mounted can be. Over the years I have harvested and had so many deer mounted that my wife had to put a stop to it. She warned that if I get one more deer mounted, I will be the one mounted next.

Deer Antlers Mounted

I don’t want to find out if she is serious. So I found one cost effective way to mount your trophies without going through the cost and hassle of a full deer mount.

In explaining all of this to my taxidermist, he suggested simply taking my deer antlers and mounting them on a board.

This is a great way to enjoy your hunting memories at the fraction of the cost to have the entire deer head mounted. See attached picture.

This time of year I get really itchy to start buck hunting again.

But here in Pennsylvania, the weather has been so hot that is hard to believe in about a month and a half I will be back out in the autumn woods for archery season.

If you are also prepping for buck hunting season, there are some things you have to do.

Start checking out your archery equipment. If there anything you need to replace, now is the time.

Check your first aid kit. Make sure your supplies are fresh.

Make sure you scout your hunting spot. Get permission from the owners.

Test your bow. You should be shooting your target every night.

Get your license. And while you’re out, shop for some new hunting gear!

As a final tip, do not be like those amateur hunters who wait until the last minute. Do not wait till your sporting goods stores are too crowded to get you hands on anything.

I will work to keep updating you on the buck hunting season.

Happy Hunting,
Paul

The anatomy of a deer is crucial for hunters to learn. Many longtime hunters I know still don’t know exactly where (or when) to place their shots. What really helped me to be a successful hunter was to sit down and really study the deers anatomy, to learn exactly where to place the arrow (or bullet) for that one shot kill.

I think this is as important or more so, then the equipment you are using. We must make ourselves responsible for that one shot. When I hunt, my foremost thought is that I only have one shot, this keeps me focused on my shot placement and also the right time to deliver the shot..this is crucial. Try to find yourself an overlay of a whitetailed deer anatomy and study it, know exactly where to place your shot and when to shoot, be it a heart, lung or a shot in the middle of the shoulder if using a gun.

Whether you are hunting with a bow or gun, you will be a more successful hunter if you take the time to learn the deers anatomy.

Happy Hunting,
Paul

In 1989 I decided to keep a journal of all my hunting days. I have recorded everything I saw, what my hunting buddies saw, and also times and dates when we harvested deer. This is a great way way to keep accurate records of days afield that were successful. It is amazing to me that so many days in November are repeating days each year that I have harvested a Whitetail deer.

You may want to start your own journal, it is a great way to help you reflect on your hunting years gone by, and will also help you to decide which days in November to hunt.

Check my blog next week for more helpful hunting tips.

Since childhood I wanted to hunt. Was it because I grew up in the 50′s watching Davey Crockett??? I just remember my suction arrows (so does my sister, as she was my target so many times). Then came my first re curve bow. How I loved that one. Wasn’t until after my stint with Uncle Sam and I came home that I seriously took up hunting.

I loved it all, rifle, small game, archery….That is the one that won out. Just enjoy that time of year. Already I am getting the bug and its not even summer.

Looking over equipment to see if there is something new I need (like there is really something I need). I am a gadget guy so always on the lookout. Will let you know what I find.

I would love to have some input on what you think about Turkey Hunting.

A lot of my friends go turkey hunting, but I have yet to really catch the bug. I think it would be great between buck season – it’s certainty challenging and exciting.

But up until now, the only time I ever got a turkey was with a bow. I could go on and on, telling you an epic story of how I tried hard to get it, but the truth is, I actually stumbled upon the turkey.

Still, I can’t help but give turkey season a little more thought. I will most likely get into it when I retire. (Still a few years away.)

I know many turkey hunters are as passionate about spring hunting as I am about fall archery season.

Whatever type of archery you choose, the main thing is to LOVE IT!

Happy Hunting,
